BBC reports: The majority of hotspots in Riau are inside April and Sinar Mas concessions

Greenpeace says: Notorious Indonesian pulp and paper producer APRIL has had a chequered history with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). But late last week we heard that the relationship has finally came to an end – and in a most unexpected way.

Jikalahari says: The issuance of an eco-restoration license by the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry to a not forprofit restoration organization initiated and supported by APRIL “…is an indication that the mode of corporate crime in the forestry sector continues to this day in Pelalawan.”

APP says: APP has announced an end to the clearing of natural forest across its entire supply chain in Indonesia, with immediate effect.

APRIL is now the single largest converter of natural forest among Indonesia’s pulp producers.

APRIL: Indonesia has approximately 131 million hectares of forest estate. The Indonesian Government has zoned 53 million hectares as conservation and protected forests and about 78 million hectares for production forest development.

All of APRIL’s wood supply comes from these development zones, on land that the Indonesian Government has licensed specifically for industrial plantation development (HTI).

APRIL should “change their unsustainable business model and stop draining peat soils and converting forests”.

APRIL: We fundamentally disagree with any claim that our business model is unsustainable. In fact, our key objective and one that we are diligently working towards, is to reach a point where all of our fibre comes from renewable and sustainable plantation sources. That is at the heart of our business model – making good commercial and environmental sense.
